Hi Duncan, thanks for taking the time for a chat! What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day at Dolphin House is never really typical — and that’s part of the fun. I usually start off by catching up with the team and find out what’s happening around the centre, then most of my time is spent looking ahead and shaping what’s next. Planning future programmes, exploring new ideas, and thinking about how we keep things fresh.
When summer rolls around, I get to spend more time out on expeditions, leading and assessing groups in the local hills, which is definitely one of the highlights of the year.
You’ve been part of the team since 2020. How have you seen Dolphin House evolve over that time and what has stayed reassuringly the same?
Over the past few years, there have been a range of exciting developments at Dolphin House. The campus has had a real boost, making it a much nicer place for groups to stay, and our newly developed Outdoor Classroom has become a brilliant space for getting young people learning and exploring in new ways. Also, the team itself has grown and developed — we now offer apprenticeships, bring in trainees, and create more chances for young people to learn, train, and progress within the outdoors.
But even with all the changes, the core of Dolphin House is still exactly the same. The place still has that welcoming feel, in an amazing setting, and the focus on giving people memorable experiences.
When you’re not busy ensuring Dolphin House is running smoothly, how do you unwind outside of work?
I’m usually outdoors — exploring new places, staying active, and spending time with family. I really enjoy hill walking, paddle boarding, cycling, and running.
With 6 years of memories at Dolphin House, you must have some favourites. Can you share a moment that stuck with you?
There are plenty of great memories, but a few really stick out. Helping bring paddleboarding in as a new activity was a big one, and running expeditions over to Arran is always a highlight. But, my favourite thing is that my connection to Dolphin House goes way back — I came here myself in primary school. So being part of the team now feels like a full‑circle moment.
And finally, if you were deserted on an island, what one thing would you want with you?
Probably my trusty expedition tent — at least I’d have somewhere comfy to hide when the island weather turns!
